I would agree that Mr. Millar has a load of talent....and I must say I am quite impressed with his performance at the Dauphine. Lest we forget that Millar is younger now..than was Indurain at the time he assumed his dominance of international cycling(and younger than Mr. Armstrong when he to began his stronghold). I'm not yet ready however to speculate that Mr. Millar is perhaps a talent from the mold of Miguel Indurain(In-du-rah-een..not In-der-rain). Yes Millar is now a maturing cyclist..and perhaps now physiologically prepared to show us all exactly the true limits of his awesome potential. Now about Mercado....how could you dare compare him to Leonardo Piepoli?(you knew that one would hurt?) Mercado was just a kid with a new pro contract in hand..when he managed to come out of nowhere to finish 5th overall in the Vuelta a'Espana(with a stage win to boot) in 2001...just a few months removed from his 22nd birthday. Mercado, now 24...has perhaps moved to another level in his short career with a very impressive ride in the recent Dauphine'. Mercado won a stage and finished a very respectable 7th(won best young rider competition). I would guess that Mercado is on par with Millar's progress(from age 22-24) and perhaps even ahead of him at that age. Anyway...Mercado still has 2-3 yrs before he will be considered 'mature'...so just how good will he be then? I believe Mercado will impress us further in the Tour in a few weeks. Perhaps we can pick up this debate during that time. When the Tour reaches the high Alps and Pyrenees in the coming weeks..I'm expecting to see the 24 yr old phenom right up there as the lead groups deteriorate to a chosen few. Perhaps he'll be there in elite company with Armstrong, Heras, Aitor Gonzalez, and yes..even David Millar. I think that Mercado could be a grand Tour winner within a few years..when he fully matures and his time trial improves. He's not just a 22 yr old kid having fun at the Vuelta anymore.
